mayor at flag dMayor Heyward was elected Mayor of the Town of Hollywood in July 2007. She always had a passion for Hollywood, a small rural community located in Charleston County, where her service began over 30 years ago as a teacher and guidance counselor at Baptist Hill High School.

Mayor Heyward’s life began in the neighboring community of Yonges Island where she was reared by her parents, William and Carrie W. Smashum. She graduated from Baptist Hill High School in Hollywood, South Carolina. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from St. Augustine College and Graduate Degree from Winthrop University. She is married to James Lee Heyward. They are parents to 5 children and 8 grandchildren.

As a grassroots resident, she observed physical, socio-economical, and emotional changes transpire in the community of Hollywood, which led her to become a public servant for the citizens of Hollywood.

During her first year as Mayor, she has led the Town of Hollywood to unity and collaboration among council members and residents, focusing on the Town’s goal. “Improving The Quality Of Life For All its Residents.” She introduced a collaborative style of governance with the creation of Projects Taskforce Committees, Mayor’s Advisory Committee, The Power of 10, and Neighbors Helping Neighbors CDC. The establishment of The Power of 10 allows community members to reclaim their neighborhoods with innovative projects that will help stimulate community pride and fellowship. Neighbors Helping Neighbors provides emergency assistance to residents of Hollywood and empowers low to moderate income families to improve their quality of life through community housing initiatives, workforce training, human services, and personal development and neighborhood revitalization.

Mayor Heyward continues to move steadfast to inspire hope for a better future for Hollywood residents where people of all abilities, color, and gender can participate, contribute, and reach their goals.
